“Pine Island Elementary School, Mill Creek Middle School and Comstock Park High School are teaming up to host a Internet Safety Awareness Class for parents to attend. This one time meeting will take place on February 22, 7:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
While on-line computer exploration opens a world of possibilities for preteens/teens, expanding their horizons and exposing them to different cultures and ways of life, they can also be exposed to dangers as they hit the road exploring the information highway. There are individuals who attempt to exploit preteens/teens through the use of on-line services, chat rooms, Facebook, other social networking sites, etc. They listen to and empathize with the problems of middle schoolers and high schoolers. They are aware of the latest music, hobbies and interests of young people. Their aim is to become your child’s on-line “friend”. Unfortunately, we’ve all read on the news what can result from these types of experiences.
From texting to Facebooking, to web-surfing, there are a multitude of possible scenarios your child could find themselves in if they make a bad decision. The purpose of this meeting is to make parents aware of how they can help their son/daughter avoid becoming a victim as a result of their own on-line behavior.
Hopefully, your schedule is open so that you can attend this meeting.”
